Throughout life we form belief systems. Our parents, friends, siblings, teachers, authority figures and others that we communicate with can add to these belief systems by judging us based on our social standing, age, education, economic class, religion, gender, sexual orientation and other traits.

Some of these judgments or opinions could be positive. Maybe we’re told that we’re smart, we’re a good student, or that we can do anything we set our mind to.

But some of the feedback we receive are negative, such as, you’re not good enough, you’re not smart enough, or that you’re not attractive enough. These judgments and words begin to affect our thinking if we accept them to be true. And if these are reinforced overtime they can program our unconscious mind, our beliefs and opinions about ourselves.

At our deepest core, we are sensitive to what others say about us. When others say hurtful or negative things sometimes we soak it up like a sponge, especially when we are children. The feedback we receive as kids forms the foundation of our personalities, how we think and feel about ourselves, and the world.

We often easily pick up other peoples’ negatively charged junk and carry it through life. And it is not necessarily spoken words conveying these negative messages. Postures, gestures, and body movements are the windows to what someone is really thinking and feeling about us. Our unconscious mind can pick up on those subtle meanings within others’ body movements and the way they carry themselves. Even if lips lie, the body always tells the truth.

So if we get a sense that someone or a group perceives us in a particular way, this can also lead to negative self-belief. And this all can create a self-image of who we perceive ourselves including all that we believe to be true about ourselves.

So even though we might have been given labels such as, poor, stupid, bad, ugly, not good enough, or a failure, if we hear and choose to believe them, eventually we will think they are true. And these negative believes can move us farther away from our own personal power.

When we begin to wake up and realize that we can release these words and judgments from the past we can begin to create a new life for ourselves, a new future of possibility.

Words have the power to harm or to heal. And when others have passed judgment upon us and said things that were hurtful, it’s all about finding the right words that will heal us.

Activity to Challenge Your Beliefs

This is a simple exercise to help you become aware of and begin to change negative beliefs on your own.

The first step is to become aware of the undesired self-belief systems that you carry around with you on a daily basis. There may be wonderful beliefs that you have about yourself. But chances are there’s at least one negative self-belief that prevents you from moving forward in your life.

Get out pen and paper and make two columns, one positive and the other negative. Begin to write out what you believe to be true about yourself in each column.

Look at each self-belief and write down how each one makes you feel.

Then become aware of how each of the self-beliefs affects your life.

Ask yourself who would I be without these negative beliefs.

Think about times and places where the negative beliefs are not true.

Write affirmations that you can give yourself that will replace the negative self-belief. What words will heal the hurt? An example of this might be, I am good enough, I am smart, I am kind. Repeat these affirmations out loud in the morning when you wake up or anytime that you need to give yourself greater strength.

The real truth is, that we’re made up of many parts. We all have the potential to be smart, competent, confident, and successful. Just like we can all make mistakes, be lazy or fail at times.

When we decide to choose differently for ourselves, we can learn from these events and then embrace that which is good instead.

It’s our choice. We can take all the negative self-beliefs and file them under junk starting now.
