Are you creating your own personal pandemic by eating too much sugar? If so, you’re in good company because many are doing the same!!!
When we are stressed, anxious, and feel a loss of control, we naturally want to soothe ourselves. And, it’s a good thing to soothe, nurture and comfort ourselves when we’re feeling bad. After all, when our loved ones are hurting, we want to help them feel better. When we feel bad, we need nurturing and soothing too!
The trouble is, sugar doesn’t REALLY soothe, nurture or comfort us. Ok, maybe it does for a minute or two, but really, it actually does the opposite.
Sugar contributes to weight gain, spikes, and drops in blood sugar; it also creates an energy roller coaster and fatigue. It can lead to diabetes, an increase in heart disease risk factors, cancer, inflammation, depression, aging, it can lead to fatty liver, and more.
So, I’m inviting you to join me in this 5-Day break from sugar so we can support and nurture ourselves differently. Are you with me? I know it may be hard, but that’s why it’s called a challenge, to allow us to overcome behavior that’s not supporting us. The goal is to tap into, strengthen and empower ourselves with new awareness and new behavior.
Here’s how it works:
• This challenge will run from Monday, March 8 through Friday, March 12. (join our FB group here: PatriciasFitnessSanctuary
• Give up ALL sugar for 5 days. (maybe you’ll continue after that or learn to indulge with balance…)
• I’ll post information and encouragement each day.
• You’ll do a daily check-in post HERE in the EVENT THREAD and say what you’re noticing (i.e., is it hard, is it easy, in what ways do you feel better, or the same, or support for your teammates, etc.).
• Sugar goes by a lot of different names, so be careful when reading labels and making choices.
• Clear your pantry and fridge of all sugar/processed foods by Sunday night and fill it with whole foods. Read nutrition labels carefully! Lots of foods like yogurt, sauces, and cereals are loaded with sugar.
• Avoid processed food as well as store-bought salad dressings and marinades.
• Avoid honey/sugar in tea/coffee. Give up all artificial sweeteners. It’s ok to use stevia/monk fruit or just cinnamon to sweeten your food.
• Ensure every meal contains many non-starchy vegetables, especially greens, fiber, good fats, and protein, to keep your blood sugar levels balanced and reduce sugar cravings.
• Some people may find it helpful to sip on lemon water or add 2 tablespoons of Apple cider vinegar to your water bottle and sip throughout the day, which also reduces cravings.
• No fruit juice or alcohol.
• Try to limit fruits to two servings a day, opting for lower sugar fruits like berries and green apples.
• Make sure your breakfast is protein-rich to support blood sugar balance – such as eggs with veggies and avocado, a protein smoothie, oats mixed with some protein, or Greek yogurt with berries and cinnamon. Better to focus on savory rather than sweet at breakfast.
• Plan an afternoon snack such as raw nuts, a protein smoothie, Greek yogurt with cinnamon, sliced turkey, veggies with hummus, or a hard-boiled egg.
NOTE: Take the time TODAY to go through your pantry, refrigerator, and freezer.
Make a list and get what you need from the store.
Start to plan next week’s meals. It will really make a difference. You can do this!
