Anger is a body-based survival response that can be triggered quickly when we feel a threat. It amps us up, right out of the amygdala into a fight-flight response to protect ourselves or others. Anger is important to our survival.
Sustained anger and stress releases the stress hormone cortisol which, over time can lead to the risk of strokes, heart attacks, as well as compromised immune systems, aches, pains, accidents, illness, and disease. It can lead to poor decision making, dangerous situations, substance abuse, and other unhealthy behaviors.
Anger can be triggered and fueled by memories from past abuses and traumas to our psyches. This kind of anger denied and filed away can lead to depression and be equally harmful.
However, anger can also lead to opportunities for healing the past. And it can help us develop the courage to speak our truth, ask for what we need, set boundaries, and create the changes that will support us.
Tips for Anger Help:
1. If not a life-threatening situation, press the pause button, count to 100, and/or go for a walk.
2. When anger is triggered in interactions with others, practice compassionate communication (developed by Marshal Rosenberg) i.e. “When I perceive ____ I feel___. What I truly want is____. Therefore, I request that you__ __.
Of course, there’s more to it than this.
3. Work with someone to help you heal the past.
