Pain and the brain
There is a mental component to pain. You’ve undoubtedly heard stories of heroic soldiers who have rescued others, sometimes demonstrating superhuman strength in spite of being seriously injured themselves. Or maybe you have unknowingly gotten a cut or bruise while working outside all day and then later in the evening, once you see it, all of sudden you feel pain.
What this says is that when we focus on something other than the pain of that bruise or cut, like clearing land for a garden or planting plants etc, our perception of that pain can be reduced, eliminated or nonexistent. And, you probably wouldn’t even notice the pain of that bruise or cut if you just learned you won millions in the lottery.
On the other hand, we can feel that pain more intensely if we focus directly on it. Without anything to distract us, or change our focus, that pain can become excruciatingly unbearable and all we can think about. This means we have some control over the experience of pain, which is very good to know. And we can learn to switch that pain on or off.
“HYPNOSIS IS THE EPITOME OF MIND BODY MEDICINE. IT CAN ENABLE THE MIND TO TELL THE BODY HOW TO REACT AND MODIFY THE MESSAGES THAT THE BODY SENDS TO THE MIND.” – NEW YORK TIMES
Relief for Pain with Hypnosis
Hypnosis has been successfully used to relieve pain since the 1800’s when surgeons like John Elliotson, performed major operations using hypnosis in London. In 1846, Scottish doctor James Esdaile performed over 300 major operations and amputations using hypnosis. This reduced post operation mortality significantly.
Hypnosis has successfully been demonstrated to effectively relieve pain related to burns, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, child birth, dental surgery and reduction of anxiety associated with surgery and it’s been used to ease cancer pain.
If you’ve been suffering from chronic pain for quite awhile, this can sound incredible and unbelievable. But it really is possible. Studies published in the American Psychological Association (APA), by psychologists Guy Montgomery, PhD, Katherine DuHamel, PhD, and William Redd, PhD, with participants displaying different types of pain, demonstrated that they obtained substantial pain relief from hypnotic techniques.
In other studies, pain patients experienced pain relief when they were told they had been given morphine, and instead were given a placebo. This is further evidence of the impact our beliefs have with the experience of pain, and the power of our thoughts.
Using hypnosis, NLP and other energy psychology modalities, Integrity Coaching & Training Systems can help you to conquer that pain. You can learn to reduce tension, stress and change the pain sensation completely to something more tolerable. You can learn to reduce and eliminate fear associated with pain, create a state of calm, comfort and ease you can access at will. And you can boost your wellbeing, learn to feel hopeful, positive, motivated and confident in your life.
